Effective Parent Involvement in the Middle Grades (Hill & Chao 2009):

* Communicate to your student your expectations as their parent.  Explicitly tell them how well you expect them to perfom at school.
*Provide useful strategies for being successful for school work.
*Help them develop positive decision-making skills.
*Give meaning to their education by linking their learning to the "real-world".
*Foster educational and career aspirations.
*Discuss their likes and dislikes.
*Find resources to explore career interests relating to their likes.
*Plan how to reach their goals.
*Take them to your work after hours (if possible) so they can see people performing at high levels.
*Give them projects that require planning and organizing.
